At Holy Spirit School we encourage buddy classes throughout our school. The younger classes within the school have been paired with an older ‘buddy class’ for cross-age tutoring. At regular intervals the children from the two classes join together. The older students work with a younger buddy. The children participate in activities such as reading together, social play activities and art and craft. We have found through this buddy programme that both students enjoy the participation and social contact.
Buddy sessions have been found to be invaluable during first term as the kindergarten students are settling into the school. On observing children in a buddy session we have noticed as soon as we paired the students, they interacted positively and did not show any shyness. A couple of the older students who had less developed co-operative skills and low self-esteem were able to take a leadership role which normally they would not do. We found them to be encouraging, patiently listening to, and taking care of their buddy.
