Peer Support is a peer led program which focuses on developing communication skills, self-confidence and self -esteem. We believe the program benefits the whole school community. At Holy Spirit the program is run across grades K-6 each year for one session per week over a ten week period. We usually conduct Peer Support during Term 3 each year. The program provides the opportunity for students to befriend and support their peers across the grades. This fosters a positive environment for staff and students alike .
Year 6 students are trained to act as group co-leaders for a small group of children from other grades. The training is intensive and is designed to equip Year 6 students with the skills and strategies to enable them to conduct the weekly Peer Support sessions. At the sessions the groups are carefully supervised by the teachers. At the weekly sessions the groups work through a series of programmed activities aimed most particularly at developing communication, self esteem and leadership skills. We find it improves relationships in our school and allows for the possibility that conflict can be productive and positive.
Each week in the newsletter parents are notified of the theme of that particular week’s session. Parents are encouraged to discuss the weekly sessions with their child/children.
